Update: Grant County Officer Involved Death Investigation

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, has been investigating an officer involved death (OID) that took place on the morning of September 1, 2017 after Grant County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to make contact with a suspect at a residence located at 14404 Millville Hollow Road in the Millville Township.


Deputies on the scene rendered first-aid to the suspect, but the suspect, 45-year-old Roger B. Helgerson, Jr., succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.


An autopsy was conducted at the University of Wisconsin Hospital on Saturday, September 2, 2017.


The involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.


The Wisconsin DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.


DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Grant County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
