UPDATE: Officer Involved Death in Kaukauna, Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been investigating an officer involved death (OID) in the city of Kaukauna, Wis. that took place the early morning of Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

 

Fox Valley Metro Police Department was involved in a multi-jurisdictional vehicle pursuit that began in the City of Appleton and ended in Kaukauna. The suspect vehicle crashed near the intersection of County Highway OO and State Highway 55. While officers were attempting to take the suspect into custody, a Fox Valley Metro Police Officer discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries. He later died as a result of the injuries.

 

The decedent has been identified as Eduard Alexis Lopez-Ucles, age 34.

 

The involved officer is Fox Valley Metro Police Officer Sam D. Pynenberg. He has been with the department for one year. Officer Pynenberg has been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

 

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by Wisconsin State Patrol. The following agencies provided on-scene support: Appleton Police Department, Kaukauna Police Department, Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office, and Outagamie County Coroner’s Office. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
