Update: Officer Involved Death Investigation in Green Bay, Wis.

GREEN BAY, Wis.– The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved death (OID) in Green Bay, Wis. that occurred on the morning of Saturday, May 9, 2020.

 

Law enforcement from Green Bay Police Department responded to the 2800 block of University Avenue for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers observed Elder Melgar, age 42, discharge a firearm toward another individual. During the incident, Officer Roman J. Trimberger, 5 years law enforcement experience, and Officer Nicholas J. Walvort, 7 years law enforcement experience, discharged their weapons toward Melgar, who succumbed to injuries at the scene.

 

An individual identified as Manuel Hernandez, 34 years, was arrested after the incident and is being held in the Brown County Jail with criminal charges pending from the Brown County District Attorney’s Office.

 

No law enforcement personnel or other individuals were injured during the incident.

 

The involved officers from Green Bay Police Department have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

 

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Wisconsin State Patrol, and DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Brown County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
