UPDATE: Officer Involved Death Incident on Interstate in Columbia County

PORTAGE, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of Wisconsin State Patrol, has been investigating officer involved deaths (OID) following a vehicle crash that took place on southbound I-39/Hwy 51 at approximately 7:48 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2019.

 

Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Portage Police Department, and Wisconsin State Patrol were attempting to locate and contact a vehicle believed to be carrying an individual suspected of a kidnapping in central Wisconsin. The suspect-vehicle crashed into the back of a semi-trailer. The driver and one passenger in the suspect-vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased driver and passenger are:

  • Ter-Rance Phillit Simmons, D.O.B. 4/26/1995, suspected of kidnapping
  • Terrance P. Simmons, D.O.B. 3/29/1994

DCI is assisted by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office. Wisconsin State Patrol, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and Portage Police Department have been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office when the investigation concludes.
