Update: Madison Police Officer Involved Critical Incident

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved critical incident in Madison, Wis. that occurred in the early morning of Sunday, October 10, 2021.

 

At approximately 12:37 a.m., Madison police attempted to apprehend Katoine Richardson, age 19, in the 500 block of State Street in Madison, Wis. Police were attempting to arrest Richardson for Felony Bail Jumping when Richardson ran from police. Richardson was in possession of a loaded handgun which he pointed at officers. During the arrest, Madison Police Officer Keith Brown fired a round, inadvertently hitting another officer. That officer was taken to a local hospital and has since been released. Another officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest. Police took Richardson into custody, without injury.

 

No other individuals were injured during the incident.

 

DCI is leading this investigation and are assisted by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab and Wisconsin State Patrol. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
