UPDATE: Lincoln County Officer Involved Shooting

MERRILL, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, has been leading the investigation of an officer involved shooting (OIS) that took place the evening of August 24, 2019.

 

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on STH 64 in the Town of Scott, with an individual wanted following a domestic related incident. During the stop, the driver opened the door of the vehicle and displayed a weapon. The law enforcement officer fired, striking the suspect.

 

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Travis Watruba involved received no apparent injury. The deputy has worked in law enforcement for 13 years.

 

Per policy, the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

 

The suspect, Daniel E. Boldt, of Merrill, WI, was transported to a hospital for injuries and was later released to police custody. Boldt has been charged with crimes related to this incident and remains in custody.

 

As in any criminal proceeding, Boldt is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

 

The DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI, Wisconsin State Patrol, Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory, and Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports and evidence to the Lincoln County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
