Update: Columbia County Officer Involved Death Investigation

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), at the request of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, has been investigating an officer involved death (OID) that took place on the evening of August 21, 2017 in Pardeeville, Wisconsin.


A Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence, located at 416 Vince St. The responding deputy encountered gun fire originating from the residence before arriving and the altercation resulted in the deputy discharging his firearm, killing the suspect. Deputies on the scene rendered first-aid to the suspect until EMS arrived, but the suspect, 64-year-old Thomas J. Selje, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.


An autopsy was conducted by Dane County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Agnieszka Rogalska on Tuesday, August 22, 2017.


The involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.


The Wisconsin DOJ-led investigation of this incident has been a collaboration between DCI, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has been fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.


DCI is continuing to collect evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Columbia County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
