Officer Involved Critical Incident Investigation in Dane County, Wis.

OREGON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating an officer involved critical incident in Oregon, Wis. that occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, October 23, 2022.

 

During the afternoon of Sunday, October 23, Dane County Sherriff’s Office was searching in the Oregon area for an individual who was alleged to have committed several weapons violations in recent days. The subject was believed to be in the 5200 block of County Road CC in Oregon. After setting up a perimeter, the subject fled on foot. At approximately 3:15 p.m., a deputy with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office discharged their weapon, striking the subject. Life saving measures were rendered; however, such measures were unsuccessful, and the subject died at the scene. A firearm was located at the scene of the shooting.

 

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident.

 

The involved deputy from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

 

DCI is leading this investigation and is assisted by the Verona Police Department, Oregon Police Department, Sun Prairie Police Department, Madison Police Department, Middleton Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, DCI Crime Response Specialist, and the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation.

 

DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
