MADISON, Wis. – Attorney General Josh Kaul announced today that the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of School Safety (OSS), in collaboration with Pewaukee School District and Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators, is hosting trainings around Wisconsin this week to teach school resource officers and school staff about school safety concerns online.

“One way we can work to keep our schools safe is by protecting against digital threats,” said Attorney General Kaul. “This training will help those who share responsibility for school safety better understand and respond to safety challenges presented by social media.”

The digital threat assessment training will give attendees a stronger understanding of the current social media world, provide tools to proactively identify student safety concerns, and provide strategies for dealing with the new digital playground. After attending the training, attendees will have a thorough understanding of current social media platforms; the data collection process; establishing social media baselines for schools, including geolocational searches; and crisis management such as threats, lockdowns, and event preparation, including anonymous threats and obtaining exigent information. The trainings are funded through grant funding allocated from 2017 Wisconsin Act 143.

The trainings will be held around Wisconsin:

• July 22 at Waukesha Technical College
• July 23 at Fox Valley Technical College
• July 24 at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College
• July 25 at Blackhawk Technical College
• July 26 at Chippewa Valley Technical College
