Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen Announces Complaint Against Kaleb Paulos, Operator of Instant Tax Service

MADISON — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has filed suit in Milwaukee County against Kaleb Paulos alleging he engaged in deceptive business practices in the course of operating his tax preparation business, Instant Tax Service, Inc., which was located at 8106 West Appleton Avenue in Milwaukee.  According to the complaint, in late 2011, Instant Tax Service solicited Milwaukee consumers with promises of loans of up to $1,000 in anticipation of the consumers’ imminent tax refunds. Consumers were not offered $1,000 loans, but after providing financial information, were instead offered loans of $50 or $100. The complaint alleges that Paulos and his employees then utilized the consumers’ financial information to file tax returns without their consent.  Kaleb Paulos and his ITS employees then withheld large tax filing service fees from the consumers’ tax refunds, again without their authorization.  The business practices of Kaleb Paulos and his company Instant Tax Service violated numerous state consumer protection laws.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Lara Sutherlin at the Wisconsin Department of Justice.  The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) as well as the Wisconsin Department of Revenue aided in the investigation of this matter.
