More Than a Kit: A Forensic Nurse’s Role in Caring for Victims of Gender-Based Violence

Thursday, February 9th from 1 – 2:30 p.m. or Tuesday, February 21st from 10 – 11:30 a.m.

DOJ’s Deanna Grundl, RN, BSN, SANE-A, and Susie Kanack, RN, BSN, SANE-A, SANE-P,  will discuss the role of a Forensic Nurse/Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (FNE/SANE) and what a survivor can expect when seeing an FNE/SANE post assault.  Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the forensic nursing role, their part in the collaborative SART response, and how it can help victims heal after trauma.

Forensic Nurses/Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (FNE/SANEs) are integral members of the SART response and have been a discipline since the 1970’s. Research demonstrates that survivors who are seen by an FNE experience better outcomes than if they did not see an FNE.

But if a survivor doesn’t want evidence collected or is outside the “evidence window,” does it matter? Yes, it does!

FNEs offer comprehensive, thorough medical-forensic care that can be beneficial regardless of timeframes or whether the crime is being reported to law enforcement. In this session, the role of the FNE will be discussed, including best practice and what should be expected when seeing an FNE post assault. Attendees will walk away with a much deeper understanding of the forensic nursing role, their part in the collaborative SART response, and how it can help victims heal after trauma.
