MADISON — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced that 73 year old Norbert DeGroot was sentenced today for repeated sexual assault of a child.
DeGroot pled on October 17, 2013 to sexually assaulting a 4 year old child on at least 3 occasions from January of 2006 through May of 2006. It is a class B felony, punishable by imprisonment for not more than 60 years. DeGroot was previously convicted in 1989 of second degree sexual assault of a child.
Calumet County Judge Froehlich sentenced DeGroot to 25 years in the Wisconsin prison system. He ordered DeGroot to spend the first 15 years in confinement and that the remaining 10 years be served on extended supervision. In pronouncing sentence, Judge Froehlich described DeGroot as the “monster that haunts children’s dreams.”
Assistant Attorney General Karie D. Cattanach represented the State. This investigation was conducted by the New Holstein Police Department, Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, Calumet County Sheriff’s Department and Seymour Police Department.
