Governor Walker Signing the Measures Today
MADISON — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen issued the following statement in support of Rep. John Nygren’s Heroin Opiate Prevention and Education (HOPE) legislation (Assembly Bills 445, 446, 447, 448, 701, 702 and 668), being signed by Governor Walker today.
“I commend Representative Nygren for his leadership, and I thank fellow lawmakers and the Governor for their support of these critical, life-saving pieces of legislation. The spiral of opiate and Heroin abuse is unrelenting but so is our will to defeat it, and today marks an important step in ridding our great state of this evil.”
Attorney General Van Hollen added with regard to Assembly Bill 668, “I appreciate the Legislature’s support of the Treatment Alternatives and Diversion program. These projects across the state have proven effective and cost efficient as we work toward reducing victimization.”
Last September, the Department of Justice (DOJ) launched “The Fly Effect” Heroin prevention public awareness campaign to educate teens, young adults and others about Heroin and the consequences of using this highly dangerous illegal drug. Visit www.TheFlyEffect.com for more information about Heroin, personal stories and treatment resources.
Also, help prevent opiate abuse by dropping off unused, unwanted or expired medications at the upcoming National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 26, 2014.
