Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen Announces "Partnership Against Domestic Violence" Training Event for Public Safety and Criminal Justice Professionals

                   Registration is now open for April 11, 2013, free training event in Brown Deer.

MADISON — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen encourages law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates and victim/witness professionals to register now for the April 11, 2013, free training event – “Partnership Against Domestic Violence” – co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Office of Justice Assistance (OJA).  The day of training in Brown Deer, WI, will take a multidisciplinary approach in areas of domestic violence prevention, victim support and successful prosecution. 

The Wisconsin Department of Justice regularly sponsors or co-sponsors training events for law enforcement, prosecutors and victim/witness professionals.  This training is in response to a request from Brown Deer police for additional training relating to domestic violence.  In late October 2012, three women were shot and killed at a Brookfield spa.  The shooter -- the estranged husband of one of the women killed -- also took his own life.  He was the subject of a four-year restraining order when he murdered his wife.   

“Tragedies like the one in Brookfield garner a lot of attention, but sadly, we know many cases of domestic violence go unreported due to fear, intimidation and other factors,” Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said.  “The goal of this training, in part, is to help our partners in public safety better understand and address domestic violence before it escalates, if not to prevent it, and to better serve the victims of this devastating crime.”

“The horrific crimes committed in Brookfield were a stark reminder of the substantial impact of domestic violence on Wisconsin communities.  We know that early and effective intervention by law enforcement in domestic violence situations reduces violence and saves lives,” Jill Karofsky, Director of the Office of Crime Victim Services at the DOJ, said.  “The purpose of this multidisciplinary training is to give law enforcement, prosecutors, advocates and victim/witnesses professionals the tools they need to address the challenges of domestic violence.”

This training event is the first of several upcoming domestic violence training events scheduled statewide.  The next “Partnership Against Domestic Violence” training will take place at the Oshkosh Premier Waterfront Hotel & Conference Center in Oshkosh on May 23, 2013.  Please see the link below to review the training agenda and to register for the April 11th session in Brown Deer.  Agenda and Registration Form
