Joining Forces to Keep Our Kids Safe: Milwaukee to Host Attorneys General and Others for Summit

Monday, August 12, 2013
Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen

On September 16-18, 2013, State Attorneys General from around the nation will gather in Milwaukee for a conference titled “America’s Promise: Keeping Our Kids Safe.” As the newly-elected President of the National Association of Attorneys General, I chose this topic to highlight the important role of Attorneys General and other public officials when it comes to protecting children.

The conference will feature leaders and experts from around the county on topics such as current trends in drug abuse, school safety, protecting kids online, and working with child victims and witnesses. In addition, the conference will highlight how businesses and non-profit organizations stand alongside law enforcement to protect and educate young people in a variety of different ways.

I am particularly excited about the private sector businesses and non-profits that will be participating. As Attorney General, I can make sure that we investigate and prosecute crimes against children and I can help support similar efforts by local law enforcement. I also have opportunities to interact with lawmakers and raise awareness of the issues surrounding public safety. However, there is only so much that law enforcement and I can do. That is why families, churches, businesses and youth organizations all have important roles to play if we are going to make this a safer world for our children.

Concern for child safety transcends political ideology, economic status, race, and nationality. I am looking forward to seeing elected officials from different political parties, private sector leaders, academics, and representatives of law enforcement, all coming together in our state to share information and ideas. The conference will be a success if Attorneys General return to their own states with a renewed commitment to child safety and additional tools to carry out that commitment.

Although “America’s Promise: Keeping Our Kids Safe” is aimed at Attorneys General and their staff members, it is also open to members of the public who have a stake in protecting children. I am confident that those who work with children, or who work on issues relating to children, will find this conference to be informative, helpful, and a source of important contacts with others who are dedicated to protecting our kids.
