MADISON — Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen has issued the following statement regarding Friday morning's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut:
“The events that occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, last Friday were senseless, horrific and tragic. As the father of two school-aged children, I cannot imagine a more terrifying situation. The victims, their families, and those who responded to the tragedy in Newtown are in my prayers.
As Wisconsin's Attorney General, I have made protecting children a cornerstone of my administration. I firmly believe we need to do whatever we can for those who are least able to protect themselves.
As a result of Friday's tragedy, some have called for another look at our nation's gun control policy. It is always appropriate for policymakers to protect the public in ways that do not unnecessarily infringe on important rights. We should carefully and deliberately look at any and all measures that might protect the innocent. If we can keep firearms away from criminals, and do a better job of protecting children, while honoring the right of lawful citizens to keep and bear arms under the state and federal constitutions, we should do so.
