STUDENT EXTERNSHIP AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Thank you for exploring externship
and volunteer opportunities with the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The
Department offers excellent experience and learning
opportunities for law students. Law students perform
research, draft briefs and pleadings, review discovery and
conduct investigations, as well as prepare for and
participate in court appearances. Regardless of a law
student's ultimate career goals, the Department provides
practical opportunities for skill-building and professional
development. During law school, a select group of students
is chosen to work alongside approximately 90 Assistant
Attorneys General in one of seven different units within the
Legal Services Division. Offices for all Legal Services
Division staff are located in downtown Madison, Wisconsin.
Madison -- the state capital -- is home to the United States
District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, the
Wisconsin Supreme Court, District IV of the Wisconsin Court
of Appeals, the Dane County Circuit Court, the Wisconsin
Legislature, the Governor and many state administrative
agencies.
Student Externs and Volunteers: Each semester and summer,
the Division of Legal Services recruits law students to work
directly under the guidance of supervising attorneys. Students may work in the fall, spring or
summer either as volunteer law clerks without pay or as
externs earning credits from their law schools. See UW Law
School description at
http://www.law.wisc.edu/academics/clinics/deptofjusticeexternship.html;
Marquette Law School link to clinical programs at
http://204.11.208.101/cgi-bin/site.pl. In order to be
eligible for a volunteer clerkship or externship you must
have completed your first year of law school. Recruiting and
hiring information is forwarded to the two Wisconsin Law
Schools (University of Wisconsin - Madison and Marquette)
each summer, fall and spring, and to other law schools or
students on request. Individuals from other law schools are
also encouraged to apply if they will be available to work
in Madison over the summer or during the school year.
Applications for student volunteer and externship positions
for summer 2012 are due 2/13/12. If you are interested in a
law student extern or volunteer position, please forward your resume,
transcript, references, writing sample and a cover letter
indicating the units you are interested in. You can review
