Officer-Involved Domestic Violence Materials

One of the most sensitive areas in policing involves incidents where police officers are investigated for administrative and criminal misconduct. This training on officer-involved domestic violence strives to reduce the number of domestic violence incidents involving law enforcement officers; preserving officers’ careers and reducing trauma to their partners. This curriculum includes: prevalence rates, potential causes within law enforcement, early-warning signs, prevention strategies, a contrast of law enforcement and non-law enforcement domestic violence, and a review of legal and ethical issues regarding officer-involved domestic violence.

The training also includes an overview of the recommended Wisconsin model policy agencies may adopt and a detailed review of the recommended procedures that support the model policy. The model policy and the recommendations establish procedures for handling matters of domestic violence involving police officers and provide suggestions for assisting officers at increased risk for domestic violence with a focus on prevention, practical communication skills, and effective use of both professional health resources and peer support.
