Searching the Index

The NCIC III file uses search parameters that are unique only to that file. The search criteria used may produce near hits in the III File. A soundex is used on the name but, unlike the Wanted Person File, the date of birth field is searched for an exact match on month and date of birth, three years on either side of the year of inquiry. An absolute match is required on the sex/race field, but if race code Unknown is used, the file uses only the sex when searching the file.
