Sample Driver License Number Formula

The following is the formula of a driver license number for John Q Citizen, male and born May 6, 1950. License number is C325-4755-0166-01.

•      C “C” is the first letter of the person’s last name.

•      325 “325” is the coding for the remainder of the last name. It will never exceed 666 or start with zero in front of a numeric.

•      475 “475” is the coding for the first name and middle initial.

•      5 - 0 “50” is the coding for the year of birth.

•      166 “166” is the coding* for the month, day of birth and sex of the person. This number will never exceed 971. <500 = female. >500 = male.

•      01 “01” is used as a check digit or tiebreaker. May also be 11-19, 20-29, etc
