The general guideline to query a record is to use all the available data. A response from the Sex Offender Registration may be returned when a person is queried, or if vehicle information is included on the Sex Offender Registration entry, when a vehicle is queried. An inquiry of the Wanted Person and/or Vehicle Files will result in the automatic cross-search of the Sex Offender Registration.
The Sex Offender Registration is searched on queries of the warrant/wanted person file by name, sex, race and date of birth. The Sex Offender Registration is also searched on queries of the Wisconsin Criminal History File by Name, sex, race and date of birth. Responses from the Sex Offender Registration may be returned on standard person and vehicle queries, or the inquiring agency may use one of the minimum data combinations listed below to limit the query to the Sex Offender Registration File only.
Because multiple records from several files are available when the query wanted person transaction is used, multiple records concerning one individual may appear in any response. Additionally, because different states/agencies may enter Sex Offender Registration records on the same individual, multiple Sex Offender Registration records are possible in any response.
When the inquiry contains a name and DOB, the date of birth in the inquiry must match the date of birth in a record plus or minus one year of birth before a record will be retrieved. When the subject of the inquiry uses more than one DOB, the person’s name should be checked using each available birth date. Sex and race should be included to minimize multiple hits by limiting the scope of the name search. Including sex will cause NCIC 2000 to search only those records containing the same sex code as the sex code in the inquiry. Also, the inclusion of race in an inquiry can limit the search made by NCIC 2000.
