Obtaining the III Criminal History Response

Upon determining a segment is related to the person in question, a second transaction is necessary to obtain the specific criminal history record from the data base(s) identified as maintaining such information.

The III provides a method for requesting a criminal history record once a person has been associated with an Index record. Requests made on-line via III will result in automatic notification to the record holder(s) which will provide sufficient information enabling the holder(s) to respond. If the record is maintained in the FBI Integrated Automated Identification System (IAFIS), the record will be automatically returned on-line via NCIC. If the record is maintained by one or more state agencies participating in III record exchange, the state(s) will respond via the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, Inc. (NLETS).

In order to obtain a specific criminal history via the III, a Criminal History Record Request message containing the person’s FBI Number or SID Number must be used. This information may be obtained from the III identification segment response or from other sources available to the inquiring agency; e.g., local record files or CIB Transcript. The request must also contain Purpose Code and Attention Line. Department and address information are optional fields that may also be included.
