Replies to inquiries from NCIC are divided into parts called “fields.” Each field is an item of data such as a caliber, make, etc. All the fields put together make up the “record format” for that particular message. All the fields in a message are identified by a code, followed by a slash and then the data for that field. Below is a list of the field identifiers that are used by NCIC.
