Wisconsin Statute 342.31 (1) states: “Each Sheriff and Police Department in the state shall immediately report to the Department of Justice (Crime Information Bureau) each motor vehicle reported stolen or recovered within its jurisdiction.”
Statutes 165.83 and 165.84 also establish mandates for obtaining and filing information relating to all identifiable stolen or lost property.
The Vehicle File permits all agencies to meet their statutory obligations but more importantly the on-line file is of major assistance to enforcement agencies in detecting and recovering stolen motor vehicles. Vehicle entries are automatically entered in the NCIC Vehicle File permitting agencies outside Wisconsin access to Wisconsin records.
