The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) provides identifying information about subjects required to register as sex offenders under Wisconsin law, and on subjects currently being supervised by the department through either probation or parole. This information serves to advise law enforcement officers of the status of subjects they may be in contact with, and to promote the exchange of information about these individuals to facilitate criminal investigations. The Department of Corrections maintains two files:
1. The Sex Offender Registration File provides information about persons convicted of sex crimes. In 1997, the State of Wisconsin enacted the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Law. This law was created to monitor and track people convicted of or adjudicated for sex crimes and to provide access to this information for law enforcement, victims and the general public.
2. The Probation and Parole File provides information about individuals who are currently under the supervision of the Department of Corrections, either after having been placed on probation by the court or released from incarceration on parole.
NCIC also provides for access to national databases containing similar information.
