The following fields are mandatory to cause acceptance of a stolen/lost/missing/felony gun entry into NCIC: originating agency identifier, serial number, make, caliber, type, date of theft, and originating agency case number. The MIS Field is mandatory when the make is ZZZ. The entry will be rejected if one of the mandatory fields is left unfilled.
The agency entering the record must account for all fields in the Gun File record format. Ensure that all available data called for by the record format is entered when the original entry is made. Missing data obtained at a later time should be promptly added through the use of a modification message.
