The body parts status field* describes whether the whole body or only part(s) of the body has been recovered as well as the condition of those recovered parts; i.e., skeletal.
Must be characters ALL, SKL, or 15 characters (14 characaters prior to April 4, 2004) consisting of the alphabetic N, R, D, F or S. For example, DDDSSSDDDNNNDDD. Entry of all Ns is invalid. The code R is invalid on or after April 4, 2004.
The body parts status field is mandatory when the type of entry is unidentified-deceased or unidentified-catastrophe victim.

When only part(s) of a body or skeleton has been recovered, the NCIC 2000 diagram for body parts status should be used. The diagram divides the body into 15 parts that correspond to the 15 positions (14 parts prior to April 4, 2004) in the field. The field should contain N (not recovered), S (recovered skeletal), D (recovered decomposed), F (recovered fresh) or R (recovered – not valid on or after April 4, 2004) in the positions corresponding to the body parts. For example, if a decomposed body is recovered missing both legs, the field should be coded: DDDDDDDDDNNNNNN.

When only part(s) of a body or skeleton has been recovered, the NCIC 2000 computer analyzes the information and determines if additional information is required. For example, if the hands are recovered information on fingerprint classification is mandatory, if feet are recovered the footprint field is mandatory, etc.
*Prior to April 4, 2004, only 14 body part categories are accepted. On and after April 4, 2004, the head (a) is separated into the cranium (1) and mandible (2). For entries prior to April 4, 2004 use the following body part position codes:
