Cause:

Inattention to printing.

Solutions:

Ink and print one finger at a time; do not ink several fingers and then print them.  Develop and follow a set printing routine of inking and rolling digits in ascending order: digit #1 first, followed by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.  Do not allow yourself to get distracted.

An easy way to spot prints that are out of sequence is to compare the sequence or order of the rolled prints with the order of the plain impressions at the bottom of the card.

Live scan devices have quality assurance settings that validate finger sequencing against the plain impressions.  This function also ensures that the fingers are in the proper positions and should never be disabled.
