The Wisconsin Department of Justice, State Crime Laboratory-Madison is making a special request to all sheriffs’ offices that collect biological specimens from obligated offenders. At issue are the savings to be realized by decreasing the number of duplicate specimens taken from one person.
Under current DNA collection procedures, you are asked to make an inquiry through the CIB computerized criminal history records (CCH) for a person before collecting a DNA specimen. Any person whose DNA specimen has already been taken will have a flag at the top of their criminal record stating that DNA is available. If this flag exists a second specimen is not required.
The collection process is as follows:
1. Verify the person’s identity using some type of identification card containing a photo.
2. Determine the person’s DNA status by searching the CIB computerized criminal history records (CCH).
3. If a DNA specimen has not already been taken, please obtain a specimen following the instructions in the WI DNA Databank Buccal Swab Collection Kit.
4. If no SID exists for the individual, submit a DNA Registration fingerprint card to CIB.
