General Information:

Additional Information

The following list contains criminal background check contact information for states other than Wisconsin. Some states are closed record states and will release no information. Other states will release only conviction information. Still other states release both arrest and conviction information. Fees and requirements vary from state to state. CIB attempts to keep this listing current as information is received from other states.

The FBI has a database of over 32 million criminals, maintained at its facility in Clarksburg, WV. Like the CIB criminal repository, the FBI database is based on fingerprint arrest records and court dispositions, but contains records from all U.S. states and territories. The FBI’s criminal index system provides a single source of inquiry for criminal records, nationwide. CIB provides access to the FBI system for law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin. Law enforcement agencies are authorized to use the FBI’s information for criminal justice purposes. For the most part, the general public is not authorized to have access to the FBI data. Exceptions must be based on federal legislation or a state law approved by the FBI and require the submission of applicant fingerprint cards. Under no circumstances does the FBI conduct employment background checks without fingerprint cards. The majority of applicant background checks performed that are not submitted for teacher or gaming licensing are submitted under the Volunteers for Children's Act.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains Wisconsin’s Sex Offender Registry. The general public can make inquiry by calling 1-800-398-2403.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court administers a statewide court computer network called the Circuit Court Automation Program (CCAP). CCAP provides a website that can be used by the general public to access court records. Their website address is http://wcca.wicourts.gov.
Information for other state court websites may be found at: http://www.ncsconline.org/D_KIS/info_court_web_sites.html

Most police departments will make arrest reports available to the general public on request. It is helpful to them if you can supply the date of arrest, local police case number, and other identifying information. These data elements can be found on the CIB criminal record response.
