Division of Criminal Investigation

Tina Virgil, Acting Administrator

Special Assignments Bureau

The Special Assignments Bureau provides assistance to local law enforcement agencies, mainly in the area of death investigation.  This includes homicides, suspicious deaths, missing persons under suspicious circumstances, shaken baby cases and police-related shootings.  In addition, the bureau has a "cold case" unit, which assists agencies in resolving unsolved homicides around Wisconsin.

The bureau is also responsible for investigating organized crime, violent crimes, and attempts to circumvent the state's handgun purchase laws, and can be called on to investigate issues involving domestic security and threats to Wisconsin targets.  A special agent from this bureau is assigned to work with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Death Investigation School
The Special Assignments Bureau has offered its Death Investigation School since 1976.  This is an advanced course intended for experienced criminal investigators who would be assigned to conduct or supervise death investigations.  Topics relate to all types of deaths, including homicides, suicides, accidents and suspicious/sudden/unexpected deaths.  The course is intended to equip the investigator with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct a professional death investigation.  Enrollment is limited to 40 participants per year.

The next Death Investigation School is scheduled for May 5-16, 2008, and will be held at the Green Lake Conference Center in Green Lake, Wisconsin.

Application forms can be found on WILENET and in the Law Enforcement Bulletin in November, December and January of each year.  Contact Patty Kurdi at 608-266-9233 or kurdipl@doj.state.wi.us with any questions.
