MADISON The Wisconsin Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint charging Stephen H. Kohl, a Clark County man with felony bail jumping, Attorney General Van Hollen announced today.
According to the criminal complaint, Kohl has been charged with four counts of First Degree Sexual Assault of a Child, and having been released from custody on bond, intentionally failed to comply with the term of his bond requiring him to appear on all court dates. Specifically, Kohl is accused of having failed to appear at his sexual assault trial, which was scheduled for last June.
If convicted of felony bail jumping, Kohl faces imprisonment of up to 6 years and a fine of up to $10,000.
The initial appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12, 2007, in the Clark County Circuit Court before the Honorable Jon M. Counsell.
The defendant has not been tried for the alleged sexual assaults, and is presumed innocent of both sexual assault charges and the new bail jumping charge. The prosecution must prove its allegations at trial beyond a reasonable doubt.
Kohl's trial for the four charges of sexual assault is scheduled for January 15-18, 2008.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Erik Kinnunen and Barbara Oswald as special prosecutors for Clark County.
