Former Marquette County Deputy Sheriff CHARGED WITH Stealing Drugs from Evidence Room

MADISON - Daniel P. Card, age 30, formerly a Marquette County Deputy Sheriff, has been charged in Marquette County Circuit Court with multiple felony counts based on his alleged theft of drugs maintained as evidence, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced today.
If convicted of all charges, Card faces a maximum punishment of 31 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of $80,000.
The criminal complaint alleges that in May, 2007, Card, on two occasions entered the Marquette County Sheriff's evidence storage room without authorization with the intent to steal contraband drugs. The complaint alleges that on or about May 12, 2007, Card took 59 tablets of Oxycodone and a small amount of crack cocaine that was being held as evidence in the Sheriff's department evidence storage room. It further alleges that on May 19, 2007, Card again entered the evidence storage room with the intent to steal drugs.
The allegations in the complaint and described above have not yet been proven in a court of law. The defendant is presumed innocent, and the state bears the burden of proving the defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The court has scheduled an initial appearance for Card in Marquette County Circuit Court on January 14, 2008.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Jeffrey Gabrysiak and Dennis Krueger as special prosecutors for Marquette County. The case was investigated by the Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation.
